“A Be-Greened City”

How does it work?
Equipment
- Tubes from toilet paper or paper towels
- Soil
- Coloured markers, preferably waterproof
- Cotton pads (round)
- A pair of scissors
- Seeds (lentils/beans/chickpeas/germinator seeds: fenugreek, broccoli, leeks, etc.)
Cut the tubes into various heights and shapes.
Using markers, draw tiny windows, doors and other building details on the cardboard tubes. Use waterproof markers so the ink does not run when the cardboard gets wet.
Insert a cotton pad into each tube and push it to the bottom using a pen.
Fill the tubes with soil, holding them flat against the tray to keep the cotton pad in place. This will help keep the soil in the tube while also creating a small reserve of water.

Lay seeds on top of the soil. Then cover with half an inch of soil.
Gently water the soil with the spray bottle to help germinate the seeds.
The soil should always remain slightly damp. Depending on the temperature, the seeds should be watered once or twice a day.
The carton tube’s colour will help indicate if the soil is dry or damp. The tube will not deteriorate as long as it is not handled when wet.
Place the tiny city close to a window so it receives enough light to encourage proper germination in line with nature’s rhythms.
After several days, the first shoots will peek out. Children love watching these seeds grow and develop; it is a real delight.
